Jump 4 Joy

Cutest Lil' Boogie
Last Buzz Records BUZZ 8022

by Mike Garner

Jump 4 Joy
Shake Shake/ Jump For Joy/Square Dance Boogie/Three Times A Fool/My Baby's Boogying/ Vicious Vicious Vodka/ Happy/ Snuff Dripping Mama/ Just Cause I Left You/ Tell That Woman/ Tee Nah Nah/ Juicy!/ True Love

The CD bears the legend "100% guitar free" and this four piece led by pianist Ulf Sandström proves that a blues band doesn't need a guitar player. In fact, not only does this Swedish four piece have Ulf's excellent vocals and piano playing they have Bo Gustafsson's sax, too.
Sandström's playing and singing shows a depth and maturity in his understanding of piano based blues.

Two cuts from the repertoire of Amos Milburn ("Square Dance Boogie", "My Baby's Boogying" and "Vicious Vicious Vodka") are featured, as is work by Big Joe Turner ("Jump For Joy"). So the feel is jump and rock 'n' roll with pounding piano and honking horn - real party stuff. Mostly the songs are up temp, but "Tee Nah Nah" is a slow blues by Champion Jack Dupree and Sandström gets this piano style down well, too.

If piano based blues is your thing, this Swedish foursome do the business. It's distributed by Border Music - but it's probably easiest to get it direct from the band:
